El Camino Wins, Ties for SCC Title

Long Beach’s tight zone defense made it difficult for El Camino to score from the inside in its South Coast Conference finale Wednesday.

So the Warriors (21-7, 6-2) turned to their cannons, who took care of business from the perimeter and whipped the Vikings, 91-75, in a fast-paced and physical game at El Camino.

The Warriors, ranked No. 5 in the state, finished on top of the SCC race and, depending on the outcome of Saturday’s Cerritos-Long Beach game, could play host to the conference tournament that starts next Thursday. If Cerritos wins, it ties El Camino for first place.

For now though, the Warriors are enjoying a lopsided victory over a team that had no business beating them earlier this season. Long Beach (18-12, 4-3) defeated El Camino, 98-91, in January due mainly to the Warriors’ poor performance.

Things were a lot different the second time around, and sophomore guard Kevin Mixon, known by his teammates as “Top Gun,” made sure of it with a game-high 30 points. He scored 21 in the first half.

Four other El Camino players scored in double figures. Van Myers had 17, David Keeter 14, and Zlatco Josic and Kelvin Harris 10 each.

Weather postponed Wednesday’s community college basketball game between Marymount College and Cerro Coso. The Southern California Athletic Conference game is rescheduled for 7:30 tonight at Harbor College. Cerro Coso, located in the desert northeast of Bakersfield, was snowed in Wednesday.
