Snow Forces Postponement of Ballgames

Snowy conditions forced the postponement of several college sporting events Wednesday, a first for many coaches in the Valley area.

Valley College’s basketball game against Bakersfield has been rescheduled for Monday because Bakersfield was unable to travel south on snowbound Interstate 5.

“This is the first time I’ve been snowed out,” Valley Coach Jim Stephens said. “It puts us in a tough position because now we play Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Monday.”

Moorpark College’s baseball game at Antelope Valley also was postponed until Monday because of snow. Moorpark Coach Ron Stillwell recalled being snowed out in Buffalo, N. Y., when he played in the International League, but this was his first time as a coach.

“It’s too bad,” quipped Stillwell. “We’re tough in the snow and the sleet and the wind.”

The baseball game between Cal State Northridge and Pepperdine has been rescheduled for Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Northridge. The Matadors already have makeup games scheduled for Feb. 14 at Cal Lutheran at 2 p.m. and May 7 at home against the University of San Diego at 1 p.m. Northridge’s next game is Friday at United States International University in San Diego.

The Northridge softball team will play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 2 p.m. in a makeup game. The teams were supposed to play in last weekend’s CSUN tournament, but the game was postponed because of rain.
