Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Parks Scores 28 as Marina Upsets Fountain Valley, 71-68

Center Cherokee Parks scored 28 points, including a pair of free throws with 22 seconds remaining, as Marina High School upset Fountain Valley, 71-68, Wednesday in a Sunset League boys’ basketball game at Marina.

Parks, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, made 11 of 15 shots, had 14 rebounds and blocked five shots. Fountain Valley (17-6 overall, 5-4 in league play) had moved to within a point, 66-65, with 59 seconds remaining when guard Doug Weaver hit a jump shot, but Marina (10-14, 3-6) scored the upset with some accurate free throw shooting down the stretch.

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 57, Ocean View 47--The host Chargers (13-12, 6-3) outscored Ocean View, 18-7, in the fourth quarter to knock the Seahawks out of first place. Bryan Murphy scored 15 points and Tom Tyler 13 for Edison. Todd Norman had 18 points for Ocean View (16-7, 6-3).

Huntington Beach 78, Westminster 59--The host Oilers (12-10, 7-2) moved into sole possession of first place. Jeff Long scored 20 points to lead Huntington Beach. Tim Dietel scored 16 points for Westminster (3-18, 0-9).

In the Century League:

El Modena 82, Santa Ana Valley 79--At Santa Ana Valley, Robbie Pietsch scored 21 points and had 15 rebounds, and Ramsey Rycraw added 14 points as El Modena (19-5, 8-1) clinched its first league title in 11 years. Chuck Steen scored 20 points for Santa Ana Valley (12-10, 4-5).

Foothill 57, Canyon 42--Mark Wilkinson scored 21 points to lead host Foothill (14-10, 6-3). Abdi Barkhorder scored 16 points for Canyon (11-12, 2-7).

Santa Ana 77, Villa Park 52--Mike Zamora scored 23 points for the Saints (18-7, 6-3) at Villa Park. Chris Johnson scored 20 points for Villa Park (9-14, 1-8).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 56, Katella 46--Mark Johnson scored 21 points to lead Cypress (11-12, 6-3) at Katella. Jared Rice scored 10 points for Cypress. Jose Resendez scored 12 points for Katella (6-15, 2-7).

El Dorado 69, Loara 46--Mike Bradach scored 16 points, Mike Renaud 15 and Travis Dowdell 14 for the Golden Hawks (19-4, 9-0) at Loara. Mike Cooney scored 17 points for Loara (4-16, 2-7).

Los Alamitos 72, Esperanza 51--Mike Wilson and Robert Conlisk each scored 15 points for Los Alamitos (11-13, 6-3) at Los Alamitos. Greg Pope led Esperanza (8-15, 2-7) with 20 points.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 83, Garden Grove 51--Scott Campbell scored 29 points and Scott Linck 17 as the Aztecs (17-5, 12-1) clinched at least a tie for the league title. Chuck York scored 15 points and Joe Squyres 13 for Garden Grove (4-18, 3-10).

Los Amigos 71, Santiago 68--Carlos Palomino scored 29 points to lead host Los Amigos (6-14, 5-8). Jason Heskett scored 18 points for Santiago (2-16, 1-12).

Kennedy 78, Pacifica 61--Guard Mike Pettengill scored 25 points and had 8 assists for Kennedy (18-7, 11-2) at Pacifica. Dustin Bonham led Pacifica (14-8, 9-4) with 19 points.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 71, Anaheim 53--Keith Walker scored 28 points to lead Brea-Olinda (18-7, 6-2) at Anaheim. Lupe Alvarez scored 17 points for Anaheim (8-14, 1-8).

Savanna 63, Valencia 37--Mustapha Abdi scored 25 points and Tim Tillman 19 to lead host Savanna (22-2, 8-1). Paul Diamond scored 10 points for Valencia (4-14, 1-8).

Western 60, Magnolia 57--Guard Sam Sabbara scored 17 points and forward Joe Romero added 13 as Western (16-6, 6-3) clinched a playoff berth at Magnolia. Jerry Jones scored 17 points for Magnolia (10-11, 4-5).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 66, Irvine 43--Guard Bill Mazurie scored 24 points as Capistrano Valley (19-4, 9-0) won its sixth league title in eight years under Coach Mark Thornton. Irvine (20-5, 6-3) lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season.

Dana Hills 52, El Toro 48--John Lloyd had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Dana Hills (15-11, 3-6). Rob Johnson scored 14 points for El Toro (13-11, 3-6).

Mission Viejo 51, San Clemente 49--Matt Turner scored 17 points to lead host Mission Viejo (10-12, 5-4). Jason Dunahee had 17 points for San Clemente (4-17, 1-8).
