IN BRIEF : Ex-Pirate to Manage Ontario Team

PITTSBURGH —
Former major league shortstop U. L. Washington will manage the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Class A team at Welland, Ontario, in the New York-Penn League next season, the team said today.
Washington, 35, of Atoka, Okla., played with the Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos and Pirates during 11 years in the major leagues ending in 1987. The switch-hitting shortstop had a lifetime batting average of .251.
