Two men were killed in separate traffic accidents Thursday morning, authorities said.

Henry Rosamond McCarty III of Escondido, 35, was killed when he swerved from a northbound lane on Interstate 5 near the La Jolla Village Drive overpass and was struck by another car, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The driver of the second car told the CHP he saw McCarty weaving in front of him about 12:30 a.m. McCarty then made an abrupt left turn and was broadsided by the second car, whose driver was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, the CHP said.

An hour and a half later, a car ran into a power pole at Paradise Valley and Briarwood roads just east of the Paradise Hills Park and Recreation Center, San Diego police said.

The driver, who was not identified, was trapped in the car and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police said the power line was damaged and the road was closed from 3 a.m. until 11 a.m.
