Brad Fabel took advantage of ideal weather by birdieing half of the holes in a nine-under-par 63 Thursday that gave him a one-stroke lead after the first round of the $750,000 Hawaiian Open at Honolulu.

Jim Carter, like Fabel a non-winner, was second at 64.

Gene Sauers scored an eagle-three in his round of 65 and was tied with David Ogrin and Dick McClean, a club pro at Kapalua, Hawaii.

A group at 66, six under par, had Lon Hinkle, Tim Simpson, John Adams, Lennie Clements, Larry Silveira, Australian Steve Elkington, South African Fulton Allem and Bobby Wadkins.

Mike Hill, making his debut on the Senior Tour, overcame gusty winds and had six birdies and one bogey for a round of five-under-par 67 and a two-stroke lead over Al Geiberger after the first round of the PGA Seniors Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Defending champion Gary Player and Orville Moody shot 70s. Arnold Palmer, Bob Charles and Paul Moran followed at 71.
