THE PREPS : Sea View League Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Corona del Mar Wins Playoff Spot : Sea Kings Finish Third With 51-47 Victory Over Tustin

Matt Herrington scored eight of his 12 points in the second half Thursday to lead Corona del Mar High School to a 51-47 victory at Tustin that clinched third place in the Sea View League and a spot in the Southern Section 3-A playoffs.

Tustin led, 30-20, at the half but Corona del Mar outscored the Tillers, 18-6, in the third quarter.

Chris Pliha made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to give Corona del Mar a 51-47 lead and after a timeout, Warren Johnson of Corona del Mar blocked Tustin’s final shot. Corona del Mar (15-9, 5-5) made 17 of 18 free throws in the game.

Estancia 61, University 59--Paul McDaniel scored on a layup with about 30 seconds left to give Estancia a 60-59 lead, and Mike Curtis added a free throw with 9 seconds left for host Estancia (19-5, 6-4), which clinched second place in league play.

University had a chance to win but Junior Oliver missed a three-pointer from the corner as time ran out. Estancia led, 33-30, at the half, but University rallied and took the lead, 49-47, after three quarters.

Guty Heredia scored a game-high 17 points to lead Estancia and teammate Mike Curtis, despite playing with a broken nose, scored 13. Stephen Mumaw and Dave Dieter scored 14 points each for University (10-15, 4-6).

Saddleback 64, Newport Harbor 46--Malru Dottin scored 24 points and had 16 rebounds to lead host Saddleback (24-1, 10-0), which has won 19 in a row. Jimmy Galbert scored 17 points and Tony Agnew had 15 for Saddleback. Agnew had a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter as Saddleback outscored Newport, 16-4, to take a 45-28 lead. Elton Moore had 11 rebounds for Saddleback.
