If the president of the United Teachers-Los Angeles meant what he said about never wanting to hurt the students of Los Angeles Unified School District, he sure has failed miserably. There probably is not one student in the entire district who doesn’t feel that teachers are underpaid and sorely deserve a pay raise.

What Wayne Johnson fails to discern, however, is that instructing teachers to withhold 20-week grades hurts only the students. The administrators can afford to wait for our grades forever, but the colleges won’t. Sure, UCLA and USC may be sympathetic to the students from the LAUSD, but does anyone really believe that either Harvard, Princeton or Stanford is going to alter its admission process and wait for grades just for LAUSD students?

By withholding grades, the teachers are losing their strongest allies--the students.
