Former USC football coach Ted Tollner was named quarterback coach Monday by the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers’ new head coach, Dan Henning, also named Joe Madden as special teams coach, replacing Wayne Sevier.

Tollner replaces Jerry Rhome, who accepted a job with the Dallas Cowboys as quarterbacks coach.

Tollner, 48, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at San Diego State from 1973-1980, was the receivers coach at Buffalo in 1987 and 1988. He coached the Trojans from 1983-86.

“Ted developed some of the top quarterbacks to come out of college over a long period,” Henning said in a statment. “He also has administrative ability from having been a head coach at one of the top college programs in the country. Now, with two years background in the NFL on a team that went from mediocrity to the playoffs, it’s natural for him to move up.”

Madden, 53, has been in private business for the last two years. He worked for Henning in an administrative capacity in 1985 and 1986 and was special teams coach for the Detroit Lions from 1980-84.

Henning has retained defensive coordinator Ron Lynn, defensive line coach Gunther Cunningham, linebackers coach Mike Haluchak, receivers coach Charlie Joiner and running backs coach Bobby Jackson from last season’s staff.
