IN BRIEF : Steve Lewis ‘Male Athlete of Year’

UCLA’s Steve Lewis, the gold medalist in the 400 meters in the 1988 Olympics, has been selected as Southern California’s 1988 male athlete of the year by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, it was announced today.
The Southern California athlete of the year is selected by the AAF’s Senior Awards Board, comprised of Southland sportswriters and sportscasters. Olympic sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner was honored recently as female athlete of the year. Lewis, a 19-year-old UCLA sophomore, was chosen over a field that included UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman and USC quarterback Rodney Peete. Lewis captured the 400 meters in 43.87 seconds and also won a gold medal for being a part of the victorious U.S. 1,600-meter relay team.
