Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes That Promote Sobriety at School Prom

Share

A scholarship contest, inviting students to create non-alcoholic drink recipes, is accepting entries through May 1 in hope of promoting sober high school prom partying this spring.

Promoted by Sunkist Growers Inc., marketer of citrus fruit, and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Drunk Driving), the contest is designed to provide students with a fun alternative to drinking alcohol on a special occasion, as well as to safeguard them from making a tremendous mistake--driving while drunk--during the prom season.

‘Contract for Life’

Both Sunkist and S.A.D.D. officials expressed the hope that the contest would draw attention to the drinking-and-driving issue, in addition to encouraging every student in the country to sign the “Contract for Life” developed by S.A.D.D. (The contract is a formal, written agreement signed by a high school student and his parents. It acknowledges potential problems and the family’s desire to face and manage them.)

Recipes will be accepted from students who are younger than 21 and enrolled in high school or college in the United States. Every drink recipe submitted must be an original and must include at least one fresh Sunkist citrus fruit--oranges, lemons, tangerines or grapefruit--in juice form. The beverage recipe also must have a citrus garnish.

There is no limit to the number of entries an individual or group may submit. But each must be on a separate piece of paper including participant’s name, address, telephone number and age printed or typed on each recipe. An official entry form is not required, although all high schools, including 14,000 that have S.A.D.D., should receive them.

The grand prize is a $2,000 scholarship. First-, second- and third-place winners will receive $1,000, $300 and $200 scholarships, respectively. Ten honorable mention winners each will receive $50 gift certificates. Each winner also will be presented with a carton of fresh citrus fruits. Winners will be announced June 1.

Recipe contest entries should be mailed to: Sunkist/S.A.D.D. Mock-Cocktail Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 4587, Overland Park, Kan. 66204.
