Terry-Jo Myers shot a tournament-record, six-under-par 66 Thursday and held a two-stroke lead after the first round of the $300,000 Hawaiian Ladies Open.

Myers had a bogey-free round to better the previous record of 67 set by Cindy Rarick and tied by Muffin Spencer-Devlin in 1987.

Deb Richard and Patty Sheehan shot 68s to share second place.

Tied at 69 were Sara Ann McGetrick, Jane Geddes, Elaine Crosby, Trish Johnson, Betsy King, Amy Benz, Alice Ritzman and Deedee Lasker.

Light winds led to low scores as more than 40 golfers in the 144-woman field matched or bettered par-72 on the 6,267-yard Turtle Bay Country Club course on the north shore of Oahu.

Myers, four months pregnant, said she overcame the day’s biggest challenge before she arrived at the course.

“I didn’t have morning sickness,” Myers said. “This is the first tournament I’ve felt good in a long time.”

Myers attributed her success on the greens to a new, cross-handed putting style she adopted two weeks ago.

Sheehan, who returned to competition after a two-month break, birdied her last four holes.

“I feel like I have a new enthusiasm for the game,” said Sheehan, who has 19 victories in her nine years on the LPGA Tour.
