A Simi Valley man was arrested Monday on charges of robbing, kidnaping and stealing the car of a 17-year-old youth who picked him up while he was hitchhiking.

Simi Valley Police Sgt. Neal Rein said Ronald Edward Miller, 23, was arrested at his home at 2:30 a.m., based on the victim’s description.

The incident began shortly after midnight Sunday when the victim, also from Simi Valley, picked up Miller, who was hitchhiking on Tapo Street near Township Avenue. The victim’s name was not released because he is a minor. Miller told the youth that he had a gun, stole about $12 and forced him to drive toward the San Fernando Valley on the Simi Valley Freeway, the victim told police.

Near Topanga Canyon Boulevard, the youth deliberately crashed into the freeway divider, jumped out and flagged down a passing driver, police said. Miller allegedly drove off in the victim’s car.

When Miller was arrested Monday morning, the stolen car was parked in front of his home, police said. He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
