Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Intersection Widenings Reduced to 28 Sites
The City Council voted Tuesday night to reduce its plan to widen congested intersections from 33 sites to 28.
The $90-million city plan to widen the city’s busiest intersections has brought opposition from property owners and people who work near the sites.
“This whole thing is a conclusion searching for a plan,” said Howard Sachar, president of Citizens for Traffic Solutions, a group opposing the city plan.
The widening would involve 12 feet of land on each side of the street at each intersection. It would affect more than 1,000 property owners and residents.
City engineers say the plan is needed to prevent congestion, improve safety and reduce pollution from drivers idling in stalled traffic.
A group formed last fall to fight the plan helped to defeat a bond measure on the November ballot that would have provided $30 million toward the widenings.
City officials say they have just $55 million of the $90 million needed for all 33 sites.
