THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : Pomona Rallies in Ninth to Beat Cal State Fullerton

Cal Poly Pomona scored two runs in the ninth to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 8-7, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in front of about 200 at Titan Field.

Chris Goldbach had a one-out double to start the rally. He went to third and Miccal Jackson reached first on an error by shortstop Randy Graves. Graves made another error on a ground ball hit by Brian Grier and Goldbach scored to tie it, 7-7. Jim Maguire’s squeeze bunt put Pomona ahead.

Fullerton went down in order in the ninth. Dan Mead worked the final three innings for the victory for Pomona (1-8). Erik Silvey allowed two unearned runs in the ninth for the loss.

Trevor Neighbors had three hits and Mate Borgogno and Brent Mayne had two hits each for Fullerton (5-4). Rex Peters, a senior first baseman, singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Bobby Jones hit his second home run of the season for Fullerton and Bill Lasher hit his first. Lasher, a junior transfer from Saddleback College, was making his first appearance of the season and hit his home run in his second at-bat.

In a Big West Conference women’s tennis match:

Cal State Long Beach 5, Cal State Fullerton 4--Kellie Moore of Fullerton defeated Stacey Belkin of Long Beach, 6-3, 6-0, but the 49ers won four of six singles matches at Fullerton. Laurie Brown also won in singles for Fullerton (2-5, 1-4).
