Strong Winds Keeping Yachts on Swift Pace

Strong northwest winds Tuesday continued to push the 14 yachts in the 1,125-mile race from Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta at a near record pace.

With 425 miles to go, leading the fleet on elapsed and handicap time was John DeLaura’s Santa Cruz-70, Silver Bullet, representing the Waikiki Yacht Club. Close behind were Citius, Cheetah, Grand Illusion and Christine, all ultra-light craft.

If favorable winds continue from Cabo San Lucas across the Gulf of California, officials on the Del Rey Yacht Club escort vessel were estimating that the lead boats would finish by midnight Thursday.

The elapsed time record for the course is 4 days 23 hours, which means this year’s leader would fall short of the record by about eight hours. The race started last Saturday at 1 p.m.
