College Roundup : Valley Rides 3-Run 8th to Victory

Share

Valley College erupted for three runs with two out in the eighth inning Friday and held on to beat San Bernardino Valley, 5-3, in the second round of the San Bernardino tournament.

After E. J. Pape’s home run broke a 2-2 tie, Eric Vargas hit a two-run bloop single that would prove decisive for the Monarchs (8-0-1). The hit drove in Mike Caputi, who had singled, and Matt Arnold, who had reached base on an error.

San Bernardino (11-4) cut the deficit to two runs in the ninth and eventually loaded the bases, but Mike Roberts, a freshman from Canoga Park High, got Valley out of the jam.
