$75,000 in College Grants Offered to Latino Students From East L.A.

The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU) will award nearly $75,000 in grants this year to Latino high school seniors and college students.

Financial assistance is available for 100 students for the fall session, with awards of $500 to those who attend East Los Angeles Community College, Cal State L.A. or Cal State Long Beach. Students attending USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine and Harvey Mudd are awarded $1,000.

Now in its sixth year, the program has awarded a total of $180,000 to more than 224 students, making it the largest scholarship fund exclusively targeted for East Los Angeles-area students.

Applicants must meet high school reference and grade requirements, and be residents of East Los Angeles, El Sereno. Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, Monterey Park, Highland Park, Commerce or Montebello.

Applications may be obtained at the TELACU office, 5400 E. Olympic Blvd., Suite 300, telephone 721-1655. They must be returned by April 17.
