Fight Outside Bar Ends in Shooting Death of San Diegan

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday outside an Ocean Beach bar, San Diego police reported.

Mark Allen Loftus of San Diego died at the UC San Diego Medical Center of a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to police, Loftus got into an argument about 1 a.m. with Charles Allen Shields, 32, at the Catalina Lounge, 4202 Voltaire St.

The two men went outside and into a nearby parking lot, where they began fighting. Loftus had taken a chair from the saloon and threw it at Shields. Police said Shields then allegedly shot Loftus and tried to flee but was caught by patrons of the bar.

Shields, who lives in the 3900 block of Hamilton Street, was arrested by police and is being held at County Jail on suspicion of murder, police said.
