Red Wings’ Probert Seized on Drug Possession Charge
Detroit Red Wings forward Bob Probert was arrested this morning at the Canadian-American border on charges of possessing 14.3 grams of cocaine, officials said.
Customs agents found the cocaine hidden in Probert’s underwear during a strip search at 7 a.m. EST on the U.S. side of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel border crossing, said Richard Hoglund, special agent in charge of the U.S. Customs Office in Detroit.
“When inspectors first examined the vehicle, they determined that Probert’s immigration document had expired and observed empty beer and liquor containers,” Hoglund said.
A secondary search of Probert’s vehicle uncovered two suspected amphetamine tablets. Drug paraphernalia were also found during a search of Probert’s pockets. Hoglund said he believed Probert was the driver of the vehicle.
Probert was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Detroit.
Red Wings spokesman Russ Gregory said the team had no immediate comment on the report. Probert’s agent, Patrick Ducharme, was not immediately available for comment.
The NHL office in New York also said there will be no comment from the league until all the facts are known.
