SDSU Loses in Baseball

San Diego State’s Billy Miller went three for four and had four runs batted in, but the Aztecs lost to host Pacific, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game Friday night.

Miller hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his second of the season.

Rob Brown (3-2) went the distance for SDSU, allowing six hits. D.J. Heller (1-0) earned the victory for Pacific (5-10).

SOFTBALL

Dana Chaiken went five for six as host UC San Diego swept a nonconference doubleheader from La Verne, 8-7 and 2-0.

Chaiken was four for four in the first game, and scored both runs in the second game.

Lynn Moreno (1-1) earned the victory in the first game, and Stacie Sasaki (2-0) limited LaVerne (1-3) to three hits to win the second game.

UCSD is 4-3.

MEN’S TENNIS

The top three singles players won for the University of San Diego, but the Toreros fell to Texas Christian, 5-3, in a match at the Corpus Christi College team championships in Corpus Christi, Tex.

Dave Stewart defeated Clint Banducci, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for USD, Mark Farren won No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Luis Rutte, and Chris Toomey defeated Eric Lingg at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

USD is 9-2 and ranked No. 21.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sondra Mitchell, Jessica Buss and Eva Olivarez all won singles and doubles matches as San Diego State (3-5) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 7-2, in a Big West Conference match at SDSU.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International University’s Alison Shapcott (74) was in sixth place at the end of the first round of the Josten’s-Patty Sheehan Golf Invitational at Fort Ord Bayonet Course in Monterey.

USIU was 11th with a score of 316. Texas and Arizona State are tied for first at 301.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

No. 1-ranked UCLA had no problem defeated San Diego State, winning three consecutive games, 15-2, 15-6, 15-6, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at SDSU.

Mike Whitcomb had 13 kills for UCLA (15-2, 10-1). Eric Etebari led SDSU (6-8, 3-6) with eight kills.
