THE PREPS : Baseball Roundup : Huntington Beach Defeats Cypress, 12-3

Chris Maher and Gerad Cawhorn had two home runs each to lead Huntington Beach High School to a 12-3 victory over Cypress in the opening round of the Loara baseball tournament Friday at Huntington Beach.

Cawhorn had three hits and five RBIs and Maher had three hits and four RBIs. Jason Bettinger had three hits and scored four runs for Huntington Beach.

In other first-round games:

El Dorado 11, Santiago 1--Bruce Petillo had three hits, including a two-run home run and a double, for host El Dorado. Greg Fife had three hits and two RBIs and Matt Luke had three hits for El Dorado. Pete Janicki got 10 strikeouts in five innings for the victory.

Irvine 6, Los Alamitos 5--Scott Brandino had a sacrifice fly to break a 5-5 tie in the fifth for visiting Irvine. Steve Nessl opened the Vaqueros’ half of the fifth with a double and scored on a single by Bobby Garcia to tie it at 5-5. Los Alamitos had taken a 5-4 lead on three-run home run by Mark Wasikowski in the third.

Marina 7, Los Amigos 2--Scott Kirkwood had a two-run home run in the second for host Marina.

Fountain Valley 4, Pacifica 2--Steve Montgomery got eight strikeouts in four innings for host Fountain Valley. Steve Lancaster also had a solo home run in the second for Fountain Valley.

Dana Hills 14, University 0--Nathan Ure had three hits and four RBIs to lead host Dana Hills. Lance Marks had two hits, including a sixth-inning two-run home run. Mike Oetinger and Mike Robertson had two hits and two RBIs for Dana Hills.

El Toro 4, Anaheim 0--Ryan Philbeck allowed two hits and got four strikeouts over four innings for the victory at Boysen Park in Anaheim. Scott Toppo had an RBI double in the first, and Bo Haley had an RBI double in the fifth.

Magnolia 5, Loara 3--Roberto Camarillo had a two-run triple in the fifth as Magnolia rallied for three runs to take a 3-2 lead at Glover Stadium. Czach Hallock hit a home run for Loara.

Kennedy 8, Savanna 4--Ernie Franco hit a three-run double in the third inning for Kennedy at Brookhurst Park in Anaheim. Steve Rath and Scott Ethington each had two hits and scored twice for Kennedy. Johnnie Gooch had a single, double and triple and scored twice for Savanna.

Lakewood 6, Laguna Hills 4--Mike Helm had three hits, including a home run, for host Laguna Hills.

Sunny Hills 5, Ocean View 1--Brent Smith threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts for host Sunny Hills.

In the El Segundo tournament:

Westminster 2, Cerritos 1--Brett Grebe pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief and had the game-winning single for Westminster.

El Segundo 8, Brea-Olinda 7--Host El Segundo scored three runs in the seventh to win. Chris Briones had three hits and two RBIs and Pat Wade had three hits for Brea.

In nonleague games:

Laguna Beach 7, Corona del Mar 6--Jeremy Megroz had a two-out single in the seventh to break a 6-6 tie for visiting Laguna Beach.

Liberty Christian 10, Claremont 0--Brian James allowed three hits and had 11 strikeouts over seven innings for Liberty Christian at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.
