Some of the world’s top motorcycle riders, including Sam Ermolenko of Cypress and Shawn Moran of Huntington Beach, will compete at 8 tonight when the 21st season of speedway racing in Southern California opens at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.
Ermolenko has qualified for four world championships, finishing third twice. Moran is the only American to win a world long track title. Both compete in the British Speedway League and will depart after the race.
Top local riders expected to race include U.S. national champion Steve Lucero of Riverside, Bobby Schwartz, Brad Oxley, Gary Hicks and Phil Collins. Each rider will compete in five five-man scratch races.
The two-race series concludes Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. The weekly season opener at Costa Mesa is scheduled for March 31.
