From Times staff and wire service reports

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Jose Lind flew to Pittsburgh this morning to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove two floating bone chips from his right elbow. Lind, 24, is expected to miss the rest of spring training but could return by opening day, team publicist Jim Lachimia said. Lind was examined Sunday at the Pirates’ spring training camp by team orthopedist Jack Failla after complaining of pain in his elbow. Failla was to perform the operation today at North Hills Passavant Hospital. In his first full major-league season in 1988, Lind batted .262 with two home runs and 49 RBI in 154 games and established himself as one of baseball’s top-fielding second basemen.
