Despite criticism from black leaders, Mayor Art Agnos announced his selection of Boston deputy housing administrator David Gilmore to head the San Francisco Housing Authority. “Gilmore has the kind of skills we need to run our public housing projects effectively in an era of declining federal support,” Agnos said. Lulann McGriff, president of San Francisco’s chapter of the NAACP, criticized Gilmore, because her organization is suing the Boston Housing Authority for alleged discrimination. But Agnos accused McGriff of “playing racial politics” and creating a controversy because Gilmore is white. The post has been filled by a black person for the past 22 years.
