Baylor’s Johnson Sets American Mark With a 20.59 in NCAA Indoor 200

Michael Johnson of Baylor set an American record in the men’s 200-meter dash, and sprinter Dawn Sowell and hurdler Tananjalyn Stanley gave the Louisiana State women’s team two impressive victories Friday night in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Johnson, 21, a junior from Dallas, won the 200 in 20.59 seconds, clipping .01 of a second off the mark set Feb. 26 by Olympic gold medalist Joe DeLoach.

Sowell, the American indoor record-holder in the women’s 200, won in 22.96, breaking the meet mark of 22.99 set last year by Pauline Davis of Alabama.

Stanley also set a meet record in winning the women’s 55-meter high hurdles in 7.47, bettering the mark of 7.53 set by Rosalind Council of Auburn in 1986.

After the first day of competition, Texas A&M;’s men led with 18 points, and LSU’s women led with 29. Twenty finals will be held today.
