High School Roundup : Simi Valley Lights Up Edison Pitching in 16-3 Victory

Jesse Anguiano and Brandon Banaga led a 13-hit Simi Valley High attack as the Pioneers defeated Edison, 16-3, Saturday in the third-place game of the El Segundo baseball tournament at Edison.

Anguiano had three hits, including a solo home run in the second inning. Banaga hit a three-run homer in the fourth. Terry Hill and Greg Santos each had two hits and a run batted in.

Pitching on two days’ rest, Rich Langford (3-0) gave up one hit and no earned runs in four innings. He struck out seven.

“Rich looked real strong,” Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers said. The Pioneers (5-1) were 4-1 in the tournament.

In other El Segundo tournament games:

Westlake 7, Long Beach Poly 5--Trailing by a run, the Warriors scored four times in the seventh inning at Long Beach Poly.

In the inning, Matt McHendry and Tim Falsken walked, Shane Kline sacrificed them to second and third and Mike Lieberthal singled them both home. Lieberthal eventually scored on a wild pitch and Chuck Foster added an RBI single as the Warriors improved to 3-2 in the tournament.

Mike Eby (2-1) was the winner in relief of Scott Lerner. In three innings, Eby gave up one hit, no walks and had five strikeouts.

Banning 5, Crespi 4--The Celts had the potential tying run at first with one out in the seventh but couldn’t push it across in the game at Banning. Crespi’s Mark Maurizi was two for four and drove in a run and teammate Mark D’Antonio was two for three.

D’Antonio, a senior making his first varsity pitching start, gave up one earned run and walked none in six innings.

Alhambra 3, Burroughs 2--Pat Hart hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to give the Moors the win.

WESTSIDE TOURNAMENT

Chatsworth 12, Hueneme 2--The Chancellors scored 10 runs in the third inning and went on to take third place at Chatsworth. Reed McMackin pitched a complete game for Chatsworth, allowing only five hits en route to his first victory.

Canyon 12, University 8--The Cowboys trailed, 5-0, after one inning, but rallied to finish seventh in the Blue Division of the Westside tournament.

Santa Monica 4, Taft 3--Taft catcher Adam Zutler was three for three with three RBIs, including a 415-foot home run, but the Toreadors fell in the consolation finals at Santa Monica.

Doug Kougher was two for three and scored two runs for Taft (3-2).

St. Bernard 9, Rio Mesa 3--Tom Deardorff hit a two-run homer for Rio Mesa in the final round, but St. Bernard scored four runs in each of the first and third innings at St. Bernard.

Deardorff was two for two, scored twice and stole two bases. David Frazier was also two for two for Rio Mesa (2-3).

Oxnard 4, Harvard 3 (9 innings)--David Aguirre hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to tie the score in the seventh and drove in the winning run in the ninth with a single at Oxnard.

First baseman Mike Wolf was two for four for Harvard.

Kennedy 22, Camarillo 2--Mike Murray was four for five--including a grand slam--and had seven RBIs for Kennedy at Camarillo.

Garrett Anderson had two doubles and a homer and Shawn Madden hit a two-run homer. Denny Sharp (2-0) gained the win, striking out 14.

NONLEAGUE BASEBALL

Thousand Oaks 5-3, Lompoc 4-6--In the first game, Todd Lang hit a three-run home run in the seventh to force extra innings and Bill Hall singled home Lance Martin in the eighth to win at Thousand Oaks. John Bushart struck out 10 in seven innings.

Lancer shortstop Mike McNellis was five for seven on the day.

Crescenta Valley 1-5, La Mirada 2-2--Mike Starkey homered and drove in two runs as Crescenta Valley came back to salvage a split. Victor Ramirez and Derek Podrebarac each had two hits for Crescenta Valley in the second game.

L.A. Baptist 20, Ribet Christian 0--Danny Shackelford homered, tripled and doubled for L.A. Baptist in the Highland Hall tournament.

Paraclete 5-13, Village Christian 4-10--Kevin Ebonhoch hit a three-run homer and Matt Bates had three hits and two RBIs in the second game for host Village Christian. Greg Lloyd was four for four in the first game.

SOFTBALL

Hart 1, Saugus 0--Junior Kym Weil pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 to lead the Indians in the final of the Hart tournament.

Weil pitched a perfect game, striking out 16, in a 2-0 semifinal win over El Camino Real.

Simi Valley 4, Burroughs 0--Left-hander Chrissy Oliver pitched a no-hitter, striking out 16, to lead Simi Valley to the championship of the Simi Valley tournament.

Oliver (2-1) was also three for three.

Simi Valley defeated Burbank, 5-1, in a semifinal as Heather Santiago tossed a two-hitter.

Alemany 5, Poly 1--Krista Gomez was three for four as the Indians took the consolation title of the Simi Valley tournament. Alemany defeated Notre Dame, 5-1, in a semifinal.
