Roundup : Serra Loses Homer but Wins Game

Serra defeated La Jolla, 8-5, Saturday at the Crawford Tournament despite having one of its players called out for using an illegal bat while hitting a three-run home run.

Trent Wilson homered in the fourth but it was ruled that his bat was not marked at 18 inches to indicate where the pine tar should stop.

John Ned (1-0) picked up the victory. Robbie Knight went three for four for Serra (2-2) with three RBIs. Serra’s Alex Williams and C.J. Meyer were two for four.

La Jolla is 1-2.

In other Crawford tournament games:

University City 8, Crawford 2--Brett Punches hit two two-run homers and Tom Braley added another to lead University City (1-2).

Morse 10, Christian 7--Morse was led by a pair of Steve Smiths. Steve Smith, the designated hitter, was two for four with two RBIs, and Steve Smith, the junior center fielder, was two for four with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Madison Warhawk tournament

Orange Glen 2, Patrick Henry 1--Herman Moreno and Shannon Vinjie hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the sixth to lead Orange Glen (3-2). Matt Taylor went 6 2/3 innings for the victory.

Carlsbad 11, Sweetwater 2--Carlsbad scored seven runs in the first two innings, and Jeff Myers went the distance, striking out nine and allowing three hits for the victory.

Monte Vista 13, Bonita Vista 4--Monte Vista (2-1-2) used an eight-run fourth inning to break open the game. Jason Berryhill hit a two-run homer in the inning. Bonita Vista is 2-3.

Mar Vista 5, Kearny 0--Jose Galaz, Fran Mondragon and Tim O’Neal had two hits apiece to lead Mar Vista (1-4). Galaz had two doubles and two RBIs, Mondragon had a triple and scored two runs and O’Neal had a double.

Madison 8, Valhalla 1--Madison (4-1) scored six runs in the second inning. Pete Valdez was two for four, and Albert Mendiola was two for three.

Hilltop Moose tournament

Mission Bay 3, Chula Vista 1--Tony Lennan did it all for Mission Bay. He went the distance for the victory and was two for three with an RBI and a run scored. Lennan (2-0) struck out seven and held Chula Vista (0-3) to three hits.

Helix 4, El Capitan 2--Rob Ippolito (1-1) picked up the win for Helix and helped his cause at the plate with three hits in three at bats. Ippolito had a double, a triple and three RBIs.

Helix is 2-1 and El Capitan is 1-2.

Mount Carmel 10, San Marcos 2--Marcus Lee and Mark Van Aelstyn hit home runs to lead Mount Carmel (2-1). Doug Hill (1-0) picked up the victory.

Pirate tournament

Grossmont 4, San Pasqual 3 (8 innings)--Grossmont had just three hits, and catcher Todd Cady had two of those to go along with three RBIs as Grossmont won in eight innings. Grossmont rallied for three runs in the sixth.
