Sixteen children from Clay Elementary School complained of back and neck pains Monday afternoon after the school bus they were in braked to avoid crashing into the back of a car that stopped abruptly in a San Diego intersection, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The bus driver for the San Diego Unified School District told investigators that the driver of a green Toyota stopped abruptly on Euclid Avenue near the intersection of Wightman Street after signaling to make a turn.

Sixteen children, ages 8 to 12, complained of pain after the bus came to a sudden stop, and ambulances took six to the hospital, the CHP spokesman said.

A Villa View Community Hospital spokeswoman said the four children admitted there were treated and released. A Hillside Hospital spokeswoman would not release any information on the two children who were reported to have been admitted there.

CHP officers were seeking the driver of the car.
