The Colleges : College Roundup : Flenner Pitches Three-Hitter as Fullerton Beats SDSU, 2-1

Huck Flenner pitched a three-hitter with a career-high 15 strikeouts to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 victory over San Diego State Tuesday in nonconference baseball at Titan Field.

Flenner, a sophomore left-hander, allowed a run in the first on a triple by Jeff Berry and a sacrifice fly by Brian Grebeck. Flenner (5-0) retired 21 consecutive hitters from the last out in the first until he issued his only walk with two outs in the eighth.

Fullerton (14-6) broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the eighth on an RBI grounder by Dave Staton to score Trevor Neighbors, who reached on an error to start the inning.

In the first, Fullerton loaded the bases with two outs before Rod Klopfer walked to force home Neighbors.

Rex Peters singled in the first to extend his hitting steak to 20 games.

Rob Brown allowed four hits and had nine strikeouts in eight innings for San Diego State (11-9).

Pepperdine 11, UC Irvine 2--Stacy Parker had three hits and an RBI for host Irvine (8-13-1), which lost to Pepperdine for the second time. Scott Schockey hit a bases-empty home run in the third for Pepperdine, the first homer Irvine pitchers had allowed in 119 innings.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, Princeton 4--Olivier Amerlinck won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, to lead Chapman at the Balboa Bay Club. Luarent Dropsey won, 6-1, 6-4, Alan Junino won, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, David Seline won, 7-6, 7-6, and Pete Bohan won, 6-4, 6-2, as Chapman (9-5) took five of six singles matches.

UC Irvine 6, Kansas 3--At No. 1 singles, Trevor Kronneman defeated John Salvo, 6-4, 6-4, to lead host Irvine. At No. 2, Mark Kaplan won 6-1, 6-0, and Richard Lubner won, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Princeton 6, UC Irvine 3--Stacy Cadigan won at No. 2 singles for host Irvine, which played without No. 1 singles player Courtney Weichsel, who is injured.
