An ongoing feud between two members of the American Legion post in Newhall turned violent Wednesday when one man shot the other to death in the post’s bar, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

The 40-year-old Newhall victim was not identified because his family had not been notified. Authorities said Raymond C. Fox, 50, of Saugus was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail at the sheriff’s station in Valencia.

The shooting occurred about 11 a.m. at American Legion Post 507 in the 24500 block of Spruce Street, Sgt. Rene Laporte said.

The two men began quarreling while they were drinking in the bar, deputies said. Witnesses said the two had a long-standing dislike for each other, authorities said.

Fox either went outside and got a .357-caliber Magnum handgun or had it on him, Laporte said. According to witnesses, he walked up to the victim, who was seated at the bar, and shot him in the head, Laporte said.

Other customers grabbed the gun from Fox and called the Sheriff’s Department. When deputies arrived, Fox was waiting on a bar stool and was arrested, Laporte said. The victim died at the scene.
