CBS’ “West 57th” Saturday night (at 10) will air what it claims is the first inside report by Western journalists on the leftist guerrilla forces operating in and around the capital of San Salvador. The segment comes on the eve of Sunday’s presidential election. “Our cameras show urban commandos operating in the heart of downtown San Salvador,” said “West 57th’s” field producer Marc Cooper. “We also document the work, structure and recruitment of heavy duty combatants on the San Salvador volcano, which is as far from the U.S. Embassy as the Hollywood sign is from Mayor Bradley’s office in Los Angeles.” Also during the 15-minute segment, Vice President Dan Quayle offers continued U.S. military support for El Salvador’s government, even if the right-wing Arena Party--accused of participating in death squad killings--wins the election.
