USD advanced to the semifinals of USD Team Tennis Tournament after defeating New Mexico, 7-2, Friday. The Toreros (14-3) will play Dartmouth today at 2 p.m. Meeting in the other semifinal match at noon will be Yale and Princeton. The finals are Sunday at 2 p.m.
MEN’S SWIMMING
UC San Diego remained in second place (327) to Kenyon (426 1/2) after the second day of the NCAA Division III championships at Brunswick, Me. UCSD’s 400-yard medley relay team of Greg Goodrich, Derron Fredrick, Jeff Vance and Jason Vance finished first in 3:25.68. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Jason Vance, Steve Denys, Josh Harris and Fredrick was second in 1:23.13.
Triton Shannon Smith finished second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:05.40. Greg Goodrich placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (52.25). In the 200-yard freestyle, Brad Thomas placed fifth (1:41.46) and Rich Daniels was sixth (1:42.14).
BASEBALL
Andy Roberts hit the game winning RBI for University of San Diego to defeat host St. Mary’s, 4-2, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game. Jim Keen was three for four with a triple and two RBIs for USD (11-9, 1-0). Pat Fitzsimons was the winner in his third complete game (5-1). St. Mary’s is 11-12, 0-1.
Host Point Loma Nazarene rallied for a 6-5 victory in 10 innings for a split of a nonleague doubleheader at home against Occidental.
Ted Webb gave Occidental a 5-4 lead in the ninth, but Tony Nobiensky hit a two-out double in the bottom half of the inning. Pinch-runner Doug Irwin then stole third and scored on an error to tie the game. PLNC (9-10) won in the 10th when John Danis led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Occidental (10-7) won the second game, 8-3.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Mike Schlegel had 22 kills to lead No. 8 San Diego State to a 14-16, 15-6, 15-6, 15-5 Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. victory over No. 18 UC Irvine at Irvine.
SOFTBALL
Lori Ann Marconi drove in Angie Rais with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lead the University of San Diego to a 2-1 victory over visiting Southern California College. The Vanguards routed USD, 8-0, in the second game of the nonconference doubleheader.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Aztecs defeated Southern Methodist University, 6-3 in the Brigham Young Invitational in Salt Lake City.
Jessica Buss defeated Debbie Ceccato, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles and then teammed with Sondra Mitchell to defeat Ceccato and Kim Gaido in doubles, 6-4, 6-1.
