High School Roundup : Notre Dame Remains Unbeaten After Sweep

Kevin Milligan hit two home runs and had five runs batted in to lead Notre Dame High to 10-0 and 21-14 victories over Alemany in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday at Alemany.

Milligan, who hit both home runs in the first game, had four hits and scored four runs in the two games. Pete Gulliver had four hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs to lead the Knights’ 21-hit attack in the second game.

Steve Colella (3-0) allowed eight hits and struck out three in the first game for Notre Dame (7-0).

In other baseball games:

Rio Mesa 19, Ocean View 0--The Spartans exploded for 12 runs in the third inning and advanced to the second round of the Glendale tournament.

Dmitri Young was three for four, including two doubles, had four RBIs and three stolen bases. Tom Deardorff was two for three and scored four runs and Steve Soliz added three RBIs. Rio Mesa (4-3) stole 11 bases in 11 attempts.

Jon Rust (2-1) limited Ocean View to three hits.

L.A. Baptist 8, Highland Hall 1--David Ophus pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven in the championship game of the Highland Hall tournament at Cal State Northridge. Tum Ratanatraiphob singled with two out in the third for Highland Hall (3-1), which managed only two baserunners.

Eric Hein had a triple and double for L.A. Baptist (5-0).

Harvard 15-5, Brentwood 0-0--Guy Starkman struck out seven and walked three en route to a complete game one-hitter for Harvard in the first game.

Mike Wolf had five RBIs in the two games.

Newbury Park 7, Saugus 7--Eric Green put the Panthers (7-1-3) ahead, 7-6, in the top of the eighth with an RBI single but Saugus rallied in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.

Village Christian 6-22, Murphy 2-7--Scott Danielson had two home runs, four hits and seven RBIs to lead the Crusaders in the nonleague doubleheader at Village Christian.

Mike Curl had three hits, including a triple and home run for Village Christian (5-3).

SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks 8, Fountain Valley 1--Alicia Zinner (5-0), who has not allowed an earned run this season, limited Fountain Valley to one hit as the Lancers (6-0) swept through pool play and advanced to the second round of the 24-team Tournament of Champions at Peralta Park in Anaheim.

Tricia Gregoire and Jamie Higgins were each three for four and Erikka Gulbranson, Shani Smyth and Sabrina O’Beirne were each two for four.

BOYS’ TRACK

San Fernando Valley Invitational--Correy Harrold of Canyon and Brian Gastelum of Birmingham each won two events at Birmingham.

Harrold won the 100 in 10.8 seconds and the long jump at 21 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Gastelum, a junior, won the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 32.1 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:56.0.

Chris Harvey of Monroe won the 200 in 22.9. Mario Armijo of Monroe won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.6) and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (40.6).

GIRLS’ TRACK

San Fernando Valley Invitational--Kynna Wright of Monroe won the 100 (12.8) and 200 meters (26.9) in the meet at Birmingham.

Cindy Byrne of Canyon won the 300 hurdles in 47.4.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall d. St. Bernard, 15-10, 15-6, 15-12--Junior middle blockers Will Fruehling and Dan White each had 12 kills, 11 service points and one ace and setter Ty Leatherman had 30 assists, 13 service points and an ace in a Camino Real League match.

Arcadia Tournament--Setter Dean Borth had 75 assists and Craig Parker had 32 kills for the day to lead Royal to a third-place finish.

The Highlanders (3-1) defeated Glendale, 15-10, in the quarterfinals before losing to Arcadia, 15-4, in a semifinal match.
