NCAA Women’s Roundup : Steding-Led Stanford Scores 105-77 Victory

Katy Steding scored 24 points to lead the Stanford women’s basketball team to a 105-77 victory over Illinois State in the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Midwest Regional at Stanford.

The Cardinal improved to 27-2. Illinois State finished 23-8.

Illinois State led only twice, at 8-6 and 10-8, but the Cardinal took a 57-37 lead at halftime. They led by as many as 32 points in the second half.

Tennessee 91, LaSalle 61--Bridgette Gordon scored 29 points to lead the top-ranked Volunteers to the East Regional win at Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee struggled for the first 12 minutes but took a 22-21 lead with 7:27 left in the half and never trailed. After leading at halftime, 39-28, Tennessee extended the margin to as many as 33 points.

North Carolina State 75, Rutgers 73--Sharon Manning made two free throws with 51 seconds left for the win in the Mideast Regional win at Raleigh, N.C., after Rutgers overcame an 11-point deficit. North Carolina State is 24-6; Rutgers finished 24-7.

Clemson 78, Georgia 65--Ramona O’Neal scored eight of her 24 points during a late 13-6 run as the Tigers upset 10th-ranked Georgia in a Mideast Regional game at Clemson, S.C.

Clemson (20-10) led, 62-57, with 4:31 left before scoring 13 of the next 19 points for a 75-63 lead with 46 seconds remaining.

Georgia (23-7) beat Clemson by 21 points during the regular season.

Maryland 78, Bowling Green 65--Vicky Bullett, a member of the U.S. Olympic team and the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, had 29 points and 17 rebounds as the top-seeded Terripins won the West Regional game at College Park, Md.

Maryland (27-2) won its 19th straight game, while the Falcons (27-4) had a 20-game winning streak snapped.

Texas 83, Montana 54--Vicki Hall scored 21 points as Texas won its 23rd straight game and ended the Grizzlies’ 22-game winning streak with the victory in the West Regional at Austin, Tex.

The Longhorns improved to 26-4, while Montana finished 27-4.

Nevada Las Vegas 84, Colorado 74--Pauline Jordan had 22 points and 17 rebounds, and her sister, Geannine, added 19 points to pace the Rebels in the West Regional game at Boulder, Colo.

Stephen F. Austin 73, Washington 63--Portia Hill scored 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds at Nacogdoches, Tex., to lead the Stephen F. Austin (30-3) into the West Regional semifinal. Yvette Cole and Karen Deden scored 18 points each for Washington (23-10).
