IN BRIEF : Pirates Reportedly Want Quinones
The Pittsburgh Pirates are interested in Seattle Mariners shortstop Rey Quinones and are expected to try to arrange a trade, a newspaper reported today.
The National League Pirates are “pursuing a trade for Quinones” and have assigned their West Coast scout, Jerry Gardner, to watch the Mariners, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, citing an unidentified source close to the Pirates. Pirates General Manager Larry Doughty was expected to contact Woody Woodward, general manager of the American League Mariners, the paper reported.
“I have not heard from the Pittsburgh ballclub,” Woodward said Sunday night. “There are no plans to trade Rey Quinones, but we are willing to listen to anyone.” Pirates officials asked former Mariners outfielder Glenn Wilson about Quinones, and he gave Quinones a high recommendation, the paper reported.
