Concert Confirmed by Troubled Symphony

The three-member governing board of financially plagued South Coast Symphony has announced that the full orchestra will play its final concert of the season as scheduled on April 29 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

“This was a commitment we felt we had to make to our subscribers and to the community,” board member Richard J. Burrell said.

Earlier, the organization had made a series of drastic cutback moves, citing a $30,000 deficit carried over from the previous season as well as other looming financial obligations of about $120,000 to finish the current season.

Burrell said that the deficit has been paid off and that there are “sufficient funds (on hand or forthcoming) to meet the obligations of the (Jose) Feghali recital and the April performance.”

The orchestra had pulled out of a holiday concert with singer Florence Henderson (who instead appeared with her own accompanists), postponed “indefinitely” a concert with baritone John Atkins announced for Jan. 21 and canceled a concert with pianist Feghali originally scheduled for March 4. Instead, Feghali will appear in a recital sponsored by the orchestra on March 28 at South Coast Community Church in Irvine.

The final concert of the season will feature trumpeter Anthony Plog. Tickets will be $6 to $21. For information, call (714) 662-7220.
