A 60-year-old Sherman Oaks teacher was shot to death in front of his home by an unknown gunman this morning as he was getting into his car to go to work, Los Angeles police said.

Hal Arthur, a social sciences teacher at Grant High School in Van Nuys, was shot in the back at 6 a.m. as he stood next to his car in front of his house in the 13900 block of Milbank Street, Lt. Dennis Dunn said. No arrests were made.

“He was struck three times in the back,” Dunn said.

Arthur’s wife and son ran from the house to aid him, and paramedics were called, but Arthur died at the scene, Dunn said.

Dunn said investigators knew of no suspects or a motive for the killing. He said there was no initial evidence that the shooting was related to Arthur’s work as a teacher.
