Author, Author

Jack Mathews, in his March 16 article “Colorization Debate Takes On a New Hue,” writes that “the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that the authors of films include not only directors, but most of their collaborators--cinematographers, art directors, editors, actors. . . . “

Shouldn’t this be obvious? Many people contribute to a motion picture, and thus a film can be said to have more than one author.

The issue involves the perpetuation of myth; even as revered a film figure as director Louis Malle, one of the earliest champions of the “auteur theory,” can be heard today discounting the auteur creed in the face of the multidimensional nature of the art of film.
