The Metropolitan Transit Development Board will open the next leg of its East Line May 14, seven weeks ahead of schedule, the agency has announced. The rest of the trolley line will open June 25, also ahead of schedule.

The $108-million construction project will extend the trolley system to El Cajon and is expected to add 15,000 riders each day. More than 30,000 people now ride the 20-mile trolley system on an average weekday.

The East Line leg that opens May 14 will extend service 4.5 miles from the Euclid Station in Southeast San Diego to stations in San Diego’s Encanto section, Lemon Grove and La Mesa.
