Colleges : Irvine’s Gillette Wins High Jump at West Coast Relays

UC Irvine’s Ryan Gillette leaped 6-10 3/4 to win the men’s open high jump at the West Coast Relays at Fresno State Saturday.

Gillette, a senior, tied his personal best with the jump.

In other Irvine highlights, Mike Morales, a former Garden Grove High standout, improved his personal best in the shot put with a mark of 53-2, and co-captain Marc Goulet placed third in the invitational 800 meters in a personal-best 1:50.48.

In the women’s division, Irvine senior Beth McGrann won the open 5,000 meters in 16:51.50.

In Big West Conference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 10, University of the Pacific 2--Paul Bunch had a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Mate Borgogno went three for five to lead the Titans (21-10, 2-0) at home. Paul Johnson (3-4) gave up two hits and struck out six in seven innings for the victory. Pacific is 10-18 overall, 0-2 in the Big West.

San Jose State 4, UC Irvine 2--Al Rodriguez went four for four, all singles, and Chris Gallego hit his first home run of the season for Irvine (10-17-1, 0-2). Mike Gonzales led 15th-ranked San Jose State (28-5, 2-0), going four for five.

In a Big West Conference softball doubleheader:

Cal Poly Pomona 6-3, Cal Sate Fullerton 1-4--Shelly McCall had two hits and three RBIs to lead Cal Poly Pomona (24-9, 12-2) in the opener at Fullerton. In the second game, Missy Coombes went two for three with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI, and Buffy Sanchez had the game-winning RBI to lead Fullerton (27-7, 11-3).

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 11-10, Christ College Irvine 5-1--Alex Andrade went four for six on the day with a home run and a double to lead SCC (18-11, 7-2) at Christ College in Irvine. Christ College is 4-17-1 overall.

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:

Stanford 3, UC Irvine 2--Irvine’s Steve Florentine had 19 kills and David Pettker 16, but Stanford, the nation’s top-ranked team, won, 14-16, 15-12, 14-16, 15-6, 15-10. Stanford is 14-3 overall, 12-2 in WIVA play. Irvine is 6-23 and 0-17.
