The networks plan to tackle two social problems plaguing Americans--illiteracy and drugs--in upcoming programming. NBC’s “Today” will devote its entire two hours to issues surrounding drugs in America on Tuesday (7-9 a.m.). Then on April 27, ABC will focus on drug-besieged Washington, as Ted Koppel anchors more than three hours of programming that examine what ABC calls “the staggering explosion of violence which is turning our inner city ghettos into killing grounds.” First Lady Barbara Bush will be seen on CBS next month delivering a public service announcement on adult illiteracy following an episode of “Kate and Allie” which focuses on the issue. In the announcement, which will air at a not-yet-disclosed date in May just after the Monday night program, Barbara Bush urges those with literacy problems to contact a national hotline.
