A “real blaster” temblor that cracked concrete and windows, swayed shades and knocked boxes off shelves gave a jolting start today to California’s Earthquake Preparedness Month campaign.

The 10:46 a.m. quake was felt throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, but no major damage or injuries were reported.

Preliminary readings of the U.S. Geological Survey said the moderate quake registered 5.0 on the Richter scale and was centered 8 miles east of Milpitas at the southern end of San Francisco Bay.
