Gene Kelly, hospitalized last week with pneumonia and now recovering at home, got a special get well card Monday when it was announced that he will receive ASCAP’s Pied Piper Award later this month. The illness forced him to cancel “An Evening with Gene Kelly” last Friday at La Mirada Civic Center. The 76-year-old Kelly had entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in mid-week under an assumed name so he could receive treatment out of the spotlight of public attention. He was released from the hospital Sunday. The award Kelly will receive on April 27 at the Beverly Wilshire recognizes contributions to the music industry of “an outstanding and unique nature.” Past Pied Piper recipients included Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and Bob Hope.
