P.M. BRIEFING : Conrail Names Hagen as Chairman

Conrail today named CSX Corp. executive James A. Hagen its new chairman, president and chief executive to fill a vacancy left by the death of Richard D. Sanborn.

Sanborn died Feb. 12 of what was described as an apparent heart attack after six weeks on the job. He was 52.

Hagen, 57, is currently president and chief executive of CSX Distribution Services Group, part of Conrail rival CSX, based in Richmond, Va. He officially joins Conrail on April 17.

Hagen was Conrail’s senior vice president of marketing and sales from February, 1977, to March, 1985.

He will succeed Stanley E. G. Hillman, who was elected by the board to the interim position of acting chairman, president and chief executive Feb. 15, after Sanborn’s death.
