Angie Straub, of Nevada Union High School near Sacramento, said she will sign a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of San Diego.

Straub said she will sign Wednesday morning, the first day athletes can sign letters of intent in the national spring signing period, just before leaving for the Senior Basketball Congress International all-star game in El Paso.

A 5-foot-4 point guard, Straub averaged 16.9 points, 6.8 assists and three rebounds per game in her four-year career. She was Nevada Union’s most valuable player the past three seasons and led the Miners to the 1989 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship and the Northern California regional semifinals.

“She’s a dynamo,” said Craig Strohm, Nevada Union’s coach. “We emphasized running and she’s very quick and very athletic.”

Straub also was her school’s most valuable volleyball player four consecutive years. She has a 3.6 grade-point-average and took official recruiting trips to St. Mary’s, Nevada Reno and Idaho.

“It came down to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, St. Mary’s and USD,” Straub said. “I chose USD because of their business school and the coaching staff. Actually, I liked everything about (San Diego).”

Straub joins Vista’s Chris Enger, who also has verbally committed to USD. The Toreras, who did not have any seniors this season, were expected to award only two scholarships for next fall.
