Cori Wang of Costa Mesa died on impact when the car her sister, Pei, was driving hit the telephone pole on the passenger side, Police Lt. Sam Cordiero said. Pei was in critical condition at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, he said.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and Swan Circle, just north of Estancia High School. Cordiero said Pei was believed to have been driving faster than 70 m.p.h. as she traveled north on Placentia Avenue, apparently in a race with another vehicle, when she lost control of the car and crossed onto the southbound side and struck the pole.
