Payne Stewart and Kenny Perry shot four-under-par 67s and remained tied for the lead in Friday’s second round of the $800,000 Heritage golf tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C., while Masters champion Nick Faldo shot a 77 and barely made the cut at 145.

Faldo had double bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes, hitting into the trees and the water.

Stewart and Perry led at 132, three strokes ahead of Rocco Mediate, who shot a 68, and Mark McCumber, who birdied seven of the last 12 holes for a 64, best round of the tournament.

PGA champion Jeff Sluman improved 12 strokes from an opening 79 to a 67 but failed to qualify at 146. Sandy Lyle of Scotland, a former British Open and Masters champion, and U.S. Open titleholder Curtis Strange also missed. Lyle shot a 71 for a 146 total, and Strange shot a 73 for a 147 total.

Gary Player shot a three-under-par 69 to tie Gene Littler for the lead at 136 after two rounds of the Tradition at Scottsdale, Ariz., a new $600,000 tournament on the Senior PGA Tour.

Littler, seeking his 11th career Senior title, shot a 70.

Bob Erickson, 63, a non-winner on the tour, was third at 139 after a 70.
