Thomas Gioiosa, who once lived with Manager Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds, pleaded not guilty to federal charges of tax evasion and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Gioiosa, who stayed with Rose and his family in his student days, declined comment about any aspect of his relationship with Rose.

The baseball commissioner’s office announced last month that it is investigating Rose for “serious allegations,” concerning betting. There has been no suggestion that Rose is in any way connected with narcotics.
