In the double role of The Jester/Slatch the Gamekeeper Boleslav Polivka bounces between 15th and 20th centuries so often the viewer gets whiplash watching him. Director-co-writer Vera Chytilova never makes it clear whether Slatch is dreaming the flashbacks, the Jester is dreaming the flashforwards or the character is really moving through time. The result is a precious conceit with more layers than a Sachertorte , but not nearly as enjoyable.
